Making Connections

Digital writing completely changes the writing game as we know it. Authorship Manifesto in the Age of the New Media brings to light all of the inevitable changes that occur with new technologies such as the internet. In her work, Bettina Lemm explains how authorship has completely changed because of the age of new media. With the addition of social networking to people’s everyday lives, i the relationship between authors and readers is strengthened in tenfold. Lemm provides through her work, this idea that by opening up communications between the writer and the reader, each group becomes a part of each other’s lives in a way that simply is not possible with traditional print.

Due to how immediate digital writing has made communication, readers have almost immediate access to their favorite digital writers. Almost immediately after a post is made by the author, readers are now able to provide their own comments and opinions, adding even more insight to what has been written. This brings more depth to the relationship between authors and readers. This new way of writing has provided the readers with a way to speak directly to the author or any piece of digital writing and share their knowledge. By having this ability to comment on a piece of writing directly, a work becomes more than just a piece of writing, but an interaction between readers and writers, completely opening the flow of ideas and information.

This type of writing also makes way for a new type of author. authors of digital writing must be open to receiving feedback that is both positive and negative. With direct commenting, there is no buffer between what is said about the piece and what the author is reading. In traditional print, authors are not getting direct feedback on their work. Feedback may go through editors or assistants, but with this new way of writing, everything is directed to the author themselves, so the authors of these kinds of works must be willing to adjust to this new level of communication from their readers.
